Healing (Cancer) Thru Food


Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I am writing this post in honor of my dear friend Renee Heidtman, who is currently living with stage 4 breast cancer. I am certain that anyone reading this knows someone who has been afflicted with breast cancer, or some other form of cancer. Cancer has been on the rise in the US for years now and it seems to keep on rising. Why? Well, obviously, my take on this is that most of it has to do with poor food choices. Of course, I realize that genetics can play a role, but to me, this seems like a bogus excuse because, whether we all want to recognize it or not, we ALL have cancer cells and if our immune systems are weak enough and we poison our body with harmful toxins, whether they be food based, environmental or psychologically related, we ALL can develop cancer. We must all become more pro-active about PREVENTION.

What can YOU do to naturally prevent and live with cancer? Here are some HTF suggestions…

Boost your immunity! Consuming fermented foods and foods with plenty of vitamin C will beef up your immune system keeping it always on the defensive for any foreign invaders. Please see my previous post on fermented food suggestions and start there: http://healingthrufood.com/?p=14 Also, supplementing with a high grade pro-biotic such as Natren’s Healthy Trinity is not a bad idea. 2/3 of our immune system lives in our gut, or intestines, so keeping this healthy with the proper amounts of good and healthful bacteria is imperative! Zinc, magnesium and selenium are also important for the immune system. Include foods that are high in these minerals as well such as nuts, seeds and leafy greens!

Antioxidants beat up cancer-consume them! Antioxidants are just what the name entails-ANTI-OXIDANT. Cancer can take over when we have oxidative stress, which basically means that our cells are not getting enough oxygen. When our bodies are toxic and carrying a heavy stressful load, this can be very taxing and dis-ease promoting. Antioxidants (vitamins such as A, C and E) work as a team and combat unstable and destructive free radicals by giving up an electron, making that free radical stable once again. As a result, they themselves become a free radical, so the more foods with antioxidants we consume the better as we cannot OD on them! We ALWAYS need them and having an abundant supply is KEY! Consume dark leafys such as kale, chard, collards, spinach and of course dark berries such as blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, etc. These have too many phytonutrients to name!

-Love lignans! These plant based phytoestrogens are antioxidants and anti cancer as well. They have the power to influence hormonal metabolism, which can most certainly have an effect on cancers such as breast and prostate because they can block the actions of estrogen and we know that when there is an abnormal amount of estrogen, this can play a role in cancer development and growth. Food sources that provide these powerful lignans are things like seeds, nuts, legumes and beans. Flax is particularly abundant in lignans, so consuming flaxseed is important. Also, please note that flaxseed and flaxseed oil should NEVER be heated or left out as it can be destroyed by light and heat. Keep oils and seeds in the fridge or in dark places in a pantry. Avoid products that use heated flax such as breads that read “now contain flax” as it has lost its nutritive properties being heated and baked. Flax is in no way heat resistant and once it is heated, it becomes toxic and adds to that level of oxidative stress.

Juice for health! Purchasing and using a juicer may be the very BEST investment in you and your health! Fresh juice provides your body with bioavailable nutrients that are known to combat cancer cell growth and also STOP cancer from metastasizing. If you are not familiar with the Gerson Method, this includes 13 glasses of juice per day, mostly raw vegan diet and coffee enemas. apple/cucumber/ginger/cilantro

Attitude is EVERYTHING! Okay, so easier said than done, you might be thinking? If life hands you lemons, I say juice the heck out of ’em! My friend Renee (and my other treasured friends and family, incidentally) are a constant reminder of how precious and short life is. You have to make the most out of this amazing, challenging and beautiful human experience. We all have challenges and obviously, some are larger than others, but at the end of the day, we all fall asleep under the same sky. We all need and crave the same things, which are support, love and touch. We must be in a good space about ourselves no matter what our life situations present us with-even if it IS cancer.
