Many people I come across have the same dilemma; the don’t know what to eat when it comes to snacks. Ideally, we should be eating every 3 hrs, so it should look like this: breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack…seems like a lot of food, but if you snack healthy and the bigger meals are proportioned and healthy, your metabolism is more balanced. Some people are under the misconception that in order to lose weight, you have to limit your food intake or go hours between meals. Peeps, this pisses your body off, big time. How would you feel if you didn’t know when your next meal was coming? You’d be a little bit stressed out, correct? Well, this is what happens to your body. It goes into starvation mode because it doesn’t know when to expect food. If you keep things regular, it can chill out a bit and just do it’s thing instead of savoring every ounce of fat and storing it because it thinks it has to. SNACK my friends! Eat healthy mini meals in between healthy bigger meals and I promise you, you will have positive results…it’s all about blood sugar balance and keeping it in balance means a happy, healthy metabolism, which in turn means burning more calories quicker…but you have to be eating the right things.
Here are some of my favorite snack suggestions…
Apples with nut butter-peanut or almond work wonderfully. Make sure to get GOOD QUALITY nut butters…no hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils EVER!
Hummus with veggie sticks-make your own hummus: combine 1 can organic garbanzo beans (drained and rinsed), sea salt, 2 tablespoons tahini, 1/2 lemon squeezed, pepper and about 1/2 cup olive oil…blend in food processor until smooth.
Home made trail mix: combine your favorite RAW nuts (avoid getting roasted nuts), dried fruit (such as cranberries, apricots, dates), carob chips, and can even add some organic pretzels.
Amazing Grass Green Superfood Energy Bars-raw, vegan, organic packed with protein and superfoods!
Gluten free rice cakes with nut butter or hummus
Green powder drink: combine a good greens powder, such as Amazing Grass with almond milk, a handful of organic berries, and dash of natural sugar (such as stevia, agave or raw honey) if needed.
A trick to the snacking is preparing things ahead of time. Never go without food. Always have emergency foods on hand for when you need them. It’s when we are desperate that we choose foods that do not serve us. Thinking ahead and having survival foods is key. Get in the habit of taking better care of yourself by training yourself to snack happy and healthy. It’s not as weird as it seems to bring food everywhere. I do, because I don’t want to get caught in a sticky situation…whether stuck in traffic of going to a party with tempting food around…this is YOUR body and YOUR life, so treat yourself well with nurturing foods. Sure, it’s okay to splurge once in a while…have that cookie, or piece of wedding cake because no one likes to be the social outcast at a party, but it’s what you do 80-90% of the time that matters. Feed yourself well and you will feel good, be more energized and hopefully influence others to make better choices as well.
